Trump’s most recent warning to introduce an additional 100% tariff on items imported from China has been described as a “typical example” of United States’ contradictory behavior, per the China’s leadership.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson further commented that Beijing could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the US President follows through on his pledge, adding that the country was “unafraid” of a possible commercial battle.

Last Friday, Donald Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for overseas sales of rare earth minerals, charging Beijing of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Furthermore, he threatened to cancel a scheduled summit with Chinese leader Xi, which was arranged for a meeting in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

His statements on that day shook global markets, with the benchmark US stock index closing down nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since April.

These statements revived apprehensions of a trade war between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the both nations had consented to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of bilateral trade stopping between the two countries.

As a result, US tariffs on Chinese goods subject to an added thirty percent tariff compared with the start of the year, while American products entering the Chinese market face a 10% tariff.

China’s latest remarks – published by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to media inquiries – reflected language from the peak of the recent trade conflict.

Officials denounced United States controls on semiconductors and chips while justifying the country’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “routine measures” to ensure national security and that of all nations.

Their representative stated that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of state security, exploited export control measures and “enforced” biased policies against China.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the right way to interact with the Chinese government,” the official commented.

“The nation’s view” on a tariff war has remained unchanging: we do not want one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Last week, China declared it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on key elements and other materials vital for high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a key move, as the country processes about 90% of the global rare earth supply, which are utilized in items such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being seen by analysts as a method of strengthening positions in preparation for upcoming negotiations.

It is unclear whether a talks between Donald Trump and President Xi, planned at a summit in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks, will take place as planned.
