Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
